CHAPTER 20

As if Odelia and Chase didn’t have enough to contend with, now another car had burst into flame, and when Dolores informed us of the name of the person this car belonged to, we were all surprised: Michael Gunt. And since Michael had expressed the fervent wish that police officer Sarah Flunk would write up the report on his burning car, the officer was dispatched to the scene, along with Odelia, Chase, and of course the four of us, since we also had a witness who might tell us more in the form of Bella the raven.

“That’s three cars in the space of two days,” said Brutus. “That can’t be a coincidence.”

“Do you think someone is deliberately setting these cars on fire?” asked Harriet.

“Maybe it’s an act of sabotage,” Dooley suggested. “Someone who doesn’t like electric cars and is trying to put them all on fire to get rid of them.”

“If that’s the case, he will have his work cut out for him,” I said. “There are probably hundreds of these vehicles in Hampton Cove alone, maybe thousands.”

“Poor Uncle Alec,” said Harriet. “Now he will have to go on foot.”

“No, he won’t,” said Brutus. “He will simply pick another car from the carpool.”

“He has a pool full of cars?” asked Dooley. “I didn’t know that. But isn’t it bad for the cars to be submerged in water all the time? Don’t they get wet inside?”

“It’s not that kind of pool, Dooley,” said Brutus dryly.

It wasn’t long before we arrived at the farm where Michael Gunt lived with his mother, and as we watched on, we saw that Sarah Flunk had already arrived and was engaging the farmer in conversation.

“He looks very happy for a man whose car has just been destroyed,” Harriet commented.

“That’s because he’s in love with Sarah,” I said. “Any excuse is good to see her again.”

“Do you think he put his car on fire himself?” asked Brutus. “Just so he could see her?”

“I very much doubt it,” I said. “He may be in love, but he’s not crazy.”

We got out of our vehicle and approached the farmer. And as we looked past him, we could see the car parked in front of the farmhouse. It was still burning. Next to it, the same lady was standing who had allowed us entry into her home the previous time. It was Michael’s mother, and contrary to her son, she didn’t look happy. I could see why. Freak fires may not be covered by car insurance. In the distance, a siren announced the imminent arrival of the firefighters, whose job it would be to put out the fire. They’d have their work cut out for them.

“I hope Michael will get a new car soon,” said Dooley. “It’s not a lot of fun to be without a car, and he probably won’t enjoy driving to the store or to the mall on his tractor, as it doesn’t go very fast.”

And since Odelia had given us strict instructions to talk to as many witnesses as we could, we decided to go in search of Bella, our friendly raven.
